Last night, March 8, 2016, the CBE held a meeting regarding the status of the September 2016 Grade 4 class. This meeting was open to the public and was attended by the principals of all of the new public schools in New Brighton and Copperfield, as well as Area V staff and Planning and Transportation staff.
It was previously announced that the New Brighton School would open as a K-3 in the first year and that Dr. Martha Cohen would open as a 4-8 school. As such, students entering Grade 4 in September 2016 were set to attend at Dr. Martha Cohen middle school once it opened in January 2017. Due to lack of a space to house these kids in the interim, however, this plan has been adjusted and two new options were presented to parents for the September 2016/17 school year.
Parents will be able to choose one of two options for their children entering grade 4 in September depending upon what suits your family best:
Option A: Students can continue to attend at Acadia School until the end of the 2016/17 school year. Buses would be provided by CBE for the 2016/17 year only.
Option B: Students can attend grade 4 at the New Brighton School (K-4 public) in New Brighton. This is contingent upon having enough students to make up classes. It was mentioned that a 3-4 split is an option should numbers be on the lower side. If there are not enough kids interested in attending the new school, parents will be notified.
CBE has intentions on accommodating both options but will require further information from parents. Parents of students entering grade 4 in September 2016 are asked to notify the CBE of their choice by March 29, 2016. This timeline allows the principals of the schools to begin planning for the 2016/17 school year. An email was sent out via Acadia school with the feedback form attached. The form is to be returned to your current school. A copy of the form can be found here: Dr Martha Cohen gr 4 Expression of Interest
Other items of interest from the meeting:
We had the opportunity to meet and chat with Jeff Hutton, our new principal. Some other topics that were discussed and may be of interest are below:
- School start times have not yet been determined. There is a meeting this week regarding start times and within the next few weeks, there will likely be a decision made. Start times will be announced by CBE as soon as they are finalized (we will also be sure to post them here). Mr. Hutton is not expecting start times to be earlier than 8:15 or later than 9 am.
- Hiring is under-way for various administration positions at the school.
We would like to thank everyone for their feedback over the last year, regarding the placement of the September 2016 grade 4s. As a result of this new direction via the CBE, we have closed our petition. We would like to thank the CBE for including an option that was representative of what many of the New Brighton parents had desired.
