We would like to introduce a new way to help us raise funds for the new K-4 public school.  If you haven’t been able to contribute to our bottle drives, attend our silent auction, aren’t interested in our independent consultant products and don’t like Cobs bread, or are just looking for an additional way to help the school, we would like to introduce our “DONATE” button.  We are now able to accept donations via our Facebook page (donate button at the top of the page) or via our website (donate button on the upper right side or at the link below).  Anyone can donate so this is also a great way for extended family or friends to help out.  Please share our link and help spread the word!  Thank you!

Dr. Martha Cohen Grade 5s Decision

The CBE has made a decision regarding where 2016/17 grade 5 students will attend school for the 2016/17 school year.  Last week parents were given the ability to provide feedback regarding the placement of these students in lieu of a lack of space at Dr. Wilma Hansen (where the remaining grade 6-8 students will attend until the school opens).  Two choices were given and parents were asked to select their preference.

The choices were:

OPTION A:  Grade 5 students can attend at the New Brighton School for the entire 2016/17 school year.  Classes would be New Brighton students only. Students from both communities would join and move to Dr. Martha Cohen for grade 6.

OPTION B:  Grade 5 students from both New Brighton and Copperfield communities would be combined and a “school within a school” system with Dr. Martha Cohen staff would be formed.  Students would attend at the New Brighton School until Dr. Martha Cohen opens, at which point, they would move into that school with their classes, teachers intact.

The option that the CBE has decided to go with is OPTION B.  Students will attend at New Brighton School with their teachers and will move, with teachers, to DMC once it opens in the new year.  More information can be found in the document here: Notice for Dr Martha Cohen

Please note that feedback to the CBE can be made via the DMC website:  http://www.cbe.ab.ca/schools/building-and-modernizing-schools/Pages/new-brighton-copperfield-middle-school.aspx

UPDATE Dr. Martha Cohen September 2016 Grade 5s

In our effort to help inform parents of students attending Dr. Martha Cohen for the 2016/17 school year, until a parent fundraising society is formed for that school, we would like to report the following new information from last night’s CBE meeting regarding the status of the September 2016 grade 5 class.  This meeting was open to the public and was attended by the principals of all of the new public schools in New Brighton and Copperfield, as well as Area V staff and Planning and Transportation staff.

Due to a lack of space to house all of the grade 5-8 kids together in either R.T. Aldermann or David Thompson schools, the CBE has determined the following course of action:

  • Students entering grade 5 in September 2016 will not be able to attend at the same location as the other Dr. Martha Cohen students due to lack of space available.
  • Parents of 2016/17 grade 5s have been given two options.  Only ONE of these options will go forward for the 2016/17 school year.  The CBE requires your feedback in order to decide which option will be chosen.

Due to the need for planning, the CBE asks for feedback on which of these two options you would prefer to be submitted by March 15.  They hope to have a decision made and communicated out before spring break.  Forms were emailed out to all Grade 4 parents.  They are to be returned to your current school.  A copy of the form can be found here:  Dr Martha Cohen gr 5 Expression of Interest

In addition to the choices above, a few other points of interest that were discussed at the meeting are below:

  • The CBE plans on having a better idea of the construction status of Dr. Martha Cohen within the next few weeks.  They will report any changes to status as soon as that information becomes available.  Currently, January 2017 is still the anticipated opening date.
  • Principal Jeff Hartl discussed that his personal preference is to move forward with Option B as it allows the kids from both communities to come together sooner and allows an earlier transition into the middle school which mirrors other middle schools in the city that include grade 5s in their student bodies.
  • Buses will be provided for Copperfield kids attending at New Brighton School, should Option B become the direction moving forward.
  • 2016/17 grades 6-8 will attend at Wilma Hansen middle school in Queensland starting in September until Dr. Martha Cohen School is complete.  New Brighton and Copperfield students will be placed together in classrooms with their Dr. Martha Cohen teachers.  This will run as a “school within a school” system.  When the new school opens, students will move with their classes and teachers.  The only change will be the physical location of where they are attending school.  Buses will be provided to transport students to Queensland until the new school opens.

We hope this information is helpful.  We remind you that CBE has a feedback form at the bottom of the Dr. Martha Cohen website should you have any questions or concerns.

UPDATE September 2016 Grade 4 Class

new update

Last night, March 8, 2016, the CBE held a meeting regarding the status of the September 2016 Grade 4 class.  This meeting was open to the public and was attended by the principals of all of the new public schools in New Brighton and Copperfield, as well as Area V staff and Planning and Transportation staff.

It was previously announced that the New Brighton School would open as a K-3 in the first year and that Dr. Martha Cohen would open as a 4-8 school.  As such, students entering Grade 4 in September 2016  were set to attend at Dr. Martha Cohen middle school once it opened in January 2017.  Due to lack of a space to house these kids in the interim, however, this plan has been adjusted and two new options were presented to parents for the September 2016/17 school year.

Parents will be able to choose one of two options for their children entering grade 4 in September depending upon what suits your family best:

Option A:  Students can continue to attend at Acadia School until the end of the 2016/17 school year.  Buses would be provided by CBE for the 2016/17 year only.

OR

Option B: Students can attend grade 4 at the New Brighton School (K-4 public) in New Brighton.  This is contingent upon having enough students to make up classes.  It was mentioned that a 3-4 split is an option should numbers be on the lower side.  If there are not enough kids interested in attending the new school, parents will be notified.

ACTION:

CBE has intentions on accommodating both options but will require further information from parents.  Parents of students entering grade 4 in September 2016 are asked to notify the CBE of their choice by March 29, 2016.  This timeline allows the principals of the schools to begin planning for the 2016/17 school year.  An email was sent out via Acadia school with the feedback form attached.  The form is to be returned to your current school. A copy of the form can be found here: Dr Martha Cohen gr 4 Expression of Interest

Other items of interest from the meeting:

We had the opportunity to meet and chat with Jeff Hutton, our new principal.  Some other topics that were discussed and may be of interest are below:

  • School start times have not yet been determined.  There is a meeting this week regarding start times and within the next few weeks, there will likely be a decision made.  Start times will be announced by CBE as soon as they are finalized (we will also be sure to post them here).  Mr. Hutton is not expecting start times to be earlier than 8:15 or later than 9 am.
  • Hiring is under-way for various administration positions at the school.

We would like to thank everyone for their feedback over the last year, regarding the placement of the September 2016 grade 4s.  As a result of this new direction via the CBE, we have closed our petition.  We would like to thank the CBE for including an option that was representative of what many of the New Brighton parents had desired.

Our Silent Auction Was Success!

Our first silent auction pub night event was a success!

We would like to thank everyone who came out and supported us.  We hope you had as much fun as we did!  We managed to raise over $6000 to put towards a playground, electronics, books and other supplies for the new K-4 school kids.  We will be posting a special thank you to all of our many donors very soon so please keep your eyes open for that.  Until then, we have the following photos to share from the event.  Thanks again and please keep your eyes and ears peeled for future fundraising events!

Petition Reminder for Sept 2016 Grade 4 Students

With the recent announcement of the feedback session regarding the placement of current grade 3’s for September 2016 during the delayed opening of Dr. Martha Cohen, we wanted to remind all parents of these students that we had started a petition back in January for those who wanted to see these kids attend at the New Brighton School (K-4) instead. We hope to discuss this petition at the event on March 8. If are a parent of a current grade 3 student who will be attending in New Brighton for grade 4 and would like to see your child attend at the new K-4 school instead of going elsewhere in lieu of the dealy with DMC, we would strongly encourage you to take a look and sign the petition. Thank you for your support.  (NOTE: We also have a link on the right side of the page)

Dr. Martha Cohen Current Grade 3-4 Accomodation Invite

This invitation was shared by the CBE regarding an invitation to discuss accomodations for the current grade 3s and 4s that will be attending Dr. Martha Cohen. Please consider attending. This would be a great opportunity for those of you who have expressed concerns about the kids not attending the K-4 school to discuss those concerns. Please be aware that Jeff Hutton is aware of our petition and we will be trying to connect with both him and Sydney Smith to discuss it prior to this meeting
