$250 000 Playground Grant

21743755_1912865745707688_6620454346864980702_oWelcome back to school!  We hope that your summer was great and that you are settling in nicely to the familiary routine that fall brings.

As many of you may know, on June 2, the government of Alberta announced a playground grant of $250 000 for many of the new schools built over the last few years (https://www.alberta.ca/release.cfm?xID=470341FE28348-EAF1-A6C3-60447AAFF82FE7BD).  We were very excited to hear about this grant and fully agree with the government that a $250 000 burden to build a playground at a school should not be one that parents should bear. $250 000 would cover the entire cost of a playground for New Brighton School.  That excitement quickly dissipated, when we learned that we did not qualify for the grant.  The eligibility requirements are based upon when the government announced the intent to build the schools (we were announced in 2013), not when the schools opened or when the construction contracts were finally announced (Feb 2015 for us).  This is why other schools that opened at the same time as us will receive a playground and we won’t.

Over the summer, through our Facebook page (https://www.facebook.com/NewBrightonSchoolCommittee), we asked our parents and their families and friends to contact MLA Rick Fraser and Minister David Eggen with their concerns.  There are many schools within Calgary that are affected by this and have the same concerns and questions as we do.  In an effort to push hard to try and get on the list of eligible schools, some of these schools are banding together to send letters to our government officials.

We would like to ask the parents of New Brighton School students to please consider emailing a letter to Ms. Tracy Allen (Executive Director for Capital Planning), Minister David Eggen (Education Minister) and Rick Fraser (MLA for Calgary SE).  To make things easier, we have included a letter that you can simply sign with your name and forward on, if you prefer (click here to download https://drive.google.com/file/d/0B0oIsUl4SKgEMDk1c2s2Q0tkRzA/view).  Even if you have already sent a letter, please consider sending another one and encourage your friends and family to do so as well.

We believe that with enough people contacting these representatives we have a chance of being heard and possibly getting on that list.

Below is the contact information for the three people to send the letter to.

  1. Hi New Brighton Elementary Parent’s Association!

I just wanted to say thank you for all your hard work on trying to get approval for the government Playground grant. Your time and effort is greatly appreciated and I just thought you should know.

I have sent my letters in the summer and happily got a reply from Rick Fraser’s camp. I will do as you have asked and send more letters on.

Thanks again for your commitment and effort!
